Why the Global Chip Shortage Happened — and Why It Still Matters

What Is the Global Chip Shortage and Why Should You Care?

The global chip shortage is one of the main reasons cars, phones, and home appliances have become more expensive and harder to find.

Semiconductor chips are used in almost everything—from smartphones and laptops to cars and refrigerators. During the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for electronics exploded, while chip factories were unable to keep up.

At the same time, carmakers canceled chip orders, expecting low sales. When car demand suddenly returned, chips were already being used by electronics companies.

Why Prices Went Up

  • People bought more laptops and gaming devices
  • Car sales recovered faster than expected
  • Factories couldn’t increase production quickly
  • Weather disasters and factory fires reduced supply

Cars Were Hit the Hardest

Modern vehicles need dozens of chips to operate safely and efficiently. Many car companies were forced to slow production, leading to fewer vehicles and higher prices.

What’s Being Done

New chip factories are being built in the U.S. and Asia, but they will take years to fully operate. Until then, prices may remain higher than normal.
